September to December Wrap-Up // Catching Up On Everything That’s Happened Since My Hiatus

Hello, friends! It’s been… quite a while.

In my last post, I said that I would try not to disappear… but then I proceeded to go on a 4 month hiatus. So much has happened since then—including me trying to draft numerous blog posts that I just ended up never posting—but I’ve decided to finally come back to blogging and thought I would chat with you all today about what’s been going on with me in the past few months!

Because 4 months is a long time and I tend to write long wrap-ups, I’ll try my best not to make this post extremely boring by only discussing the major things!! But I’m truly so glad to be back because I missed blogging and this lovely community ❤

I’m not going to be including a goals section in this wrap-up because I haven’t really been making monthly goals, but look out for my 2020 yearly wrap-up + 2021 goals post coming soon!!

Since so much has happened in these past few months, here are just a few brief highlights!!

the view of the moon from one of our road trips!
  • I discovered Notion a while ago and it’s been such a huge help in organizing basically… my entire life?? My pages have gone through way too many redesigns, but I’m really happy with how they look right now and I would highly recommend using Notion if you haven’t heard of it!
  • I went on a few social-distanced road trips with my family during week-long breaks in September and November, and they were so much fun!
  • School continued to be the absolute worst! It continued to take up most of my time throughout all of these months, which is the main reason why I had to take such a long hiatus 😭 Thankfully, though, I managed to survive my semester 1 finals and I’m currently loving being on winter break!! (and dreading going back to school…)
  • Also, time is still unreal and I can’t believe it’s almost 2021??

In terms of music and TV:

a random pretty sky ❤
  • I finished Avatar: The Last Airbender in September and it was just. SO. GOOD!! I absolutely adored everything about it and it’s one of my favorite shows of all time now.
  • I also finished The Good Place in October (I think?) after Season 4 finally came to Netflix, and the ending was so bittersweet!! Although I prefer the earlier seasons to the last one, this is still such a great show and definitely one also of my favorites.
  • As I talked about in my last wrap-up, I started getting into kpop in August, and I’ve discovered so many amazing girl groups!! If I had to choose my top 4, though, it would definitely be BLACKPINK, ITZY, Red Velvet, and Twice.
  • Taylor Swift also destroyed me with the release of evermore a few weeks ago!!! I adore all the songs so much, but my top three might be gold rush, champagne problems, and long story short.

Because I’ve read quite a lot of books ever since my last wrap-up, I’ve decided not to talk about every single book from September, October and December, but just highlight my favorites…

✧ ♡ ✧ ♡ ✧

SEPTEMBER:

Blanca & Roja Of Curses and Kisses (St. Rosetta's Academy, #1) Spin the Dawn (The Blood of Stars, #1) The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1) Coraline Crier's War (Crier's War, #1) The Promise (Avatar: The Last Airbender, #1) Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Search (Avatar: The Last Airbender, #2) Clap When You Land Avatar: The Last Airbender - Relics (Free Comic Book Day 2011)

Favorites:

  • Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim (4.5 stars): This had the most gorgeous writing and worldbuilding ever (which is saying a lot!), and the romance was also beautiful!!
  • The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi (4.5 stars): Roshani Chokshi’s prose is stunning, and the characters were so three-dimensional and well written!
  • Also, an honorable mention to the ATLA comics I read: I adored getting to see what happened exactly after the series ended and they were just so cute 🥺

✧ ♡ ✧ ♡ ✧

OCTOBER:

The Weight of Feathers Miss Meteor Don't Date Rosa Santos Cemetery Boys Iron Heart (Crier's War, #2)

Favorites:

  • Miss Meteor by Anna-Marie McLemore and Tehlor Kay Mejia (4.5 stars): This was one of my most anticipated 2020 releases, and it did not disappoint!! Anna-Marie McLemore and Tehlor Kay Mejia crafted such a powerful and beautiful story about friendship, family, and finding your worth.
  • Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas (4.5 stars): After reading this, I can assure you that it lives up to the hype!! Yadriel and Julian had the most beautiful romance, and reading their story made me so, so happy.
  • Iron Heart by Nina Varela (4.5 stars): Although I gave the first book in this series (Crier’s War) 3.5 stars because I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would, I actually ended up loving this one so much more!! The relationship between Crier and Ayla was the absolute highlight of the book, but the themes explored about humanity and power were also done so well.

✧ ♡ ✧ ♡ ✧

NOVEMBER

My mental health in November was… kind of awful, so I fell into a bad reading slump and read only two books—one of which was a comfort reread of one of my favorite books.

Red, White & Royal Blue What I Carry

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (4.5 stars): This was probably the most hyped book last year, so I’m very late to picking it up, but now I can see why everyone loves it!! The humor was so good, and I adored all the characters too.

What I Carry by Jennifer Longo (reread; 5 stars): I read this in March for the first time and absolutely adored it, so I picked it up again because I really wanted to delve into something comforting!! Thankfully, it was just as good the second time 😌

✧ ♡ ✧ ♡ ✧

DECEMBER:

Perfect on Paper All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens throughout the Ages Tell Me How You Really Feel Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Rift (Avatar: The Last Airbender, #3) Avatar: The Last Airbender - Smoke and Shadow (Avatar: The Last Airbender, #4) The Girl and the Ghost Avatar: The Last Airbender: North and South (Avatar: The Last Airbender, #5) This Is All Your Fault These Violent Delights (These Violent Delights, #1)

Favorites:

  • The Girl and Ghost by Hanna Alkaf (4.5 stars): I love Middle Grade books and reading this book reminded me that I need to pick them up more often!! This was a heartwarming, beautiful story about friendship and I would highly recommend it.
  • Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi (3.5 stars): Although I had problems with the writing style and slow beginning, the romance was so cute and I enjoyed reading this!
  • These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (4.5 stars): This was one of my most anticipated 2020 releases, and I’m so happy that my expectations were met!! I adored the characters, romance, prose and commentary on imperialism. (also the ending broke me 😭)

✧ ♡ ✧ ♡ ✧

Overall, I finished my reading challenge of 60 books in September, and even through my slump, I’m pretty happy with my reading overall? All the books I highlighted (except two) were 4.5 star reads for me, which means I’m getting better at picking books I think I’ll enjoy! or it could just be that I use a 4.5 star rating way too much…

Also, make sure to stay tuned for 2020 reading wrap-up publishing next week where I share my favorite, least favorite, surprising and disappointing books of the year, along with a bunch of stats!

I may have given up on the short story I talked about in my last wrap-up, but!! I participated in NaNoWriMo for the first time in November! I set a goal of 15,000 words for myself, because I knew 50k was too much to write while I still had school. Although I didn’t meet my goal, I still managed to write around 10k words, which is the most I’ve written in a while!!

I had the idea for a new WIP in October, and so I mostly planned and wrote specific scenes for that during NaNo. However, because this was an idea for a fantasy WIP and I’ve barely written fantasy before, I was truly overwhelmed by worldbuilding. If you have any tips for worldbuilding, please let me know because I would love any advice 😅

I was able to come up with a very brief outline for my WIP, though, and I’m hoping to continue working on it next year! Here’s a snippet from my current project:

During my hiatus, I was mostly absent from the blogosphere and barely kept up with all of your amazing posts, so I hate to do this but I’m not going to be sharing any posts today. However, comment down below if you’d like me to check out any of your posts I missed, and I would love to!!

I do have a few announcements, the first of which being that I now have a Ko-Fi page! You can click here to visit my page if you would like to support me. 🥺 Any donations will be used to help me continue creating content on my blog and youtube channel!

Also, I’m going to be deleting my MailChimp email list and email automations because the graphics and subscriber downloads I designed are kind of embarrassing and outdated, and most of my followers are following with WordPress anyways! 😅 So, if you’re currently subscribed to only my email list, make sure you follow using WordPress instead by entering your email in the sidebar or clicking the “follow” button.

As always, thank you so much for supporting me (even as I continue to disappear) 🥰

Aww Ash, I’m so glad you’re finally enjoying winter break!! School seemed a lot mote brutal this past semester, and it’s so nice to just have time to do other things right now without the stress.
I am SO glad you loved ATLA!!!!! It’s also my favorite series of all time, and I think it’s really phenomenal because it is lol. Who were your favorite characters?
Congrats on finishing your GR challenge!! The cover of What I Carry is so beautiful. I’ve actually never heard of it, so I can’t wait to check it out. I’ve also been reading a lot of middle grade lately, so The Girl and the Ghost also sounds interesting. I’m glad that most of the books you read were great! A recent favorite of mine was Descendant of the Crane. It was just so amazing, and I still can’t believe it’s just a standalone. But I also love that it’s a standalone lol
Good luck with your new WIP!! I’m already excited to hear more about it, so I hope it works out!

Welcome back to blogging, I really missed you ♥️✨

Welcome back Ash!! I literally gasped with delight when I saw your new post 😅 and WOW you read so many books these past few months!! I have a very…interesting relationship with reading at the moment 👀 but I’m glad it’s going well for you. Haha worldbuilding is difficult yet rewarding…I think it’s helpful to keep in mind that you can just focus on the few aspects of the world that are most important to your characters and expand on those, while slipping in other details here and there as necessary—I find it’s helpful to think of worldbuilding like that, I hope it was a decent tip 😅 Have a great rest of your year, and I look forward to seeing the next post!! 🥳

also hooray for finishing ATLA!! i watched and finished it in May of this year and i still can’t get over how amazing it was :’) i haven’t read the ATLA comics but i did read The Kyoshi Novels (The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi) and i highly recommend them!! they are so intense & emotional & GOOD, and Kyoshi is a bicon 🤩

i recently finished Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko and absolutely LOVED it, it’s definitely one of my favorite YA fantasies ever now ❤️ looking forward to your 2020 reading wrap-up and future posts! wishing you the best for the rest of this year + 2021 ✨💓

my family also went on socially-distanced road-trips, and we rented a villa in goa, so we’re here for a while!! that picture of the moon is so gorgeous, i love it so much!! also, what is it with taylor dropping surprise albums, and reducing us to a puddle of tears everytime!? first folklore, and now evermore!! champagne problems is definitely one of my favourites (OMG THAT BRIDGE!!), along with no body, no crime, long story short, and willow!! notion is so so helpful, i completely agree with you on that!! it took me a while to make a layout i liked, and to get accustomed with everything, but now, it’s so worth it!!

congratulations on completing your reading challenge in september!! that’s awesome – i’m so glad you rated almost all your books 4.5 stars!! i’m also loving how your WIP sounds (your writing style is 🤩), and although world building is definitely hard, i’m sure you’ll come up with something wonderful!! stay safe!! ❤❤

    Welcome back!!!

Ah yes…worldbuilding can be one of the most overwhelming things a writer has to do. A lot of times what I do is leave a lot of the in-depth worldbuilding for revising, as once I have the story written I feel like I have a better grasp on what the story needs and what holes the worldbuilding has (like magic systems that don’t make sense or lack of geography). And then I would just also say, have fun! You can do anything. You can make anything possible in your world.

I’m so happy you’re back, Ash!!

School hasn’t been great for me either. We’re doing this thing where you choose to go in person or online and the online kids call in to class. It’s not great since the teachers don’t have good technology and half the time I can’t see the board. But also school is just stressful and sucks up way too much of my time. I was so excited for the release of evermore too!! I think I prefer folklore but I still love it. I also finished The Good Place a few months ago. I really liked the ending.

I recently read The Gilded Wolves on a friend’s recommendation and really liked it! Cemetery Boys was one of my favorites of 2020. And I really need to read Miss Meteor- everyone has said such great things about it and I’ve enjoyed the authors’ other work.

I tried to write a fantasy novel for a creative writing class a few years ago and the worldbuilding was really hard. It’s something that I’m really quick to judge when reading but is so hard to execute well!

    Great post!!

    Ahhhh, welcome back lovely!!
I was so glad that I saw this post on my reader and hopefully you will read/blog more in the future! I know school can be a pain but I’m glad you’re through that part❤ And honestly, I agree that Spin the Dawn had the most beautiful writing I’ve read and the descriptions are SO DELICIOUS💓 When I read it, I was just in awe of how it was written! Have you read the next book because the beautifulness is still there!!
We definitely can’t forget about Notion!! It changed my life so much and the pages are just gorgeous when you put a lot of effort in! It’s a good thing that instead of planning my blog/reading plans on a google doc I can just make it look neat & nice on Notion (:
I’m happy that you achieved a lot of things and let’s hope 2021 will be even better!!

oh my gosh our last half of 2020 was eerily similar 😂 i also had to disappear from wordpress bc of school, and ahhh, this christmas break has been good, but i am not prepared to go back to school & being stressed on monday. but yess to participating in nano! don’t worry bc 10k words is a LOT, especially in a dumpster fire of a year like 2020 😭 and i’m so happy that you thought iron heart was better than crier’s war–that makes me even more excited to finally pick it up bc crier’s war was already amazing! i hope you have an amazing january and that we can both be less stressed & accomplish our goals in the new year :”) ❤

Oof you've reminded me that I need to watch Avatar this year, I've only watched bits and pieces but I've been meaning to watch it in its entirety. And same for Evermore welp. A January goal for sure!!

How did you read so much in October?! Also, it’s great that you finished Avatar. It’s a childhood favorite of mine, and the comics are cute too! Maybe now…you could maybe watch The Legend Of Korra now. 😆 Ahh sorry, it’s just my most favorite show, I promise you it is amazing. If you do watch it though, keep in mind that it isn’t ATLA. So it will be very different. I also love middle grade novels, so I will definitely check out The Girl And A Ghost. By the way, your YouTube channel is so beautiful and 🌟 aesthetic. 🌟 I’m glad you took a break, everyone needs to be off the grid in order to post more quality content! Have a fabulous day, and a great new year!
